Here are some late additions to the Welcome documentation. A couple of cosmetic glitches in Welcome's behavior have been reported to me. None of these affect the functionality or safety of using Welcome.
• You cannot use the character “/” in any of the Welcome messages. This restriction is due to the fact that Apple uses the character to represent a carriage return (don't ask me why they didn't just use the normal carriage return character). Welcome is smart enough to notice when you try to type the / character and displays a warning.
Unfortunately, I forgot to check for pasting the character! So, if you paste text which includes a /, your message will display with the /, but when you restart your Mac the text following the / will appear on a new line (and the / will disappear). There is no harm in this, but it is easier to compose a message if you don't use the /.
• Occasionally the window Welcome uses to display the messages will appear much smaller than normal. Don't worry, the size of your message won't be changed, it is just displayed incorrectly.
This only occurs if your machine has prompted you to insert a floppy disk sometime before you start Welcome. Fortunately, in these days of large hard drives, this shouldn't happen very often. The floppy prompt and the startup message windows are related in the system software and Apple reuses the global variable that stores the window size for both windows. I never noticed this because my Mac doesn't have a floppy drive! (my Mac these days is a Duo 210).
Unfortunately, the only way to force Welcome to use the proper sized window is to reboot your machine (and run Welcome before being prompted for a disk).
• If you have RAM Doubler you may notice a cosmetic glitch when the startup message is displayed. When Ram Doubler installs itself it moves some of the Welcome message, but does so in a not-so-nice way that causes parts of the message to be overwritten. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do about this unless we can get Connectix to change the behavior of RAM Doubler.
As a work around, you can reposition the Welcome message so that RAM Doubler doesn't interfere with it. Try leaving a couple blank lines after the first line of the Welcome message. You'll have to experiment a little bit to get it to look right.
